Consignment information (FAQ's)

Unlike traditional second-hand stores that receive donated items, consignment stores sell clothes on behalf of their clients who earn a percentage of the sales. This means that the store and the clients have a contract that states we as a business will price, display, and sell their gently used items. The Closet Exchange strives to create a “real store” feel by ensuring cleanliness, organization, and variety. 


Pricing

  • Retail pricing is determined by The Closet Exchange.
  • Prices typically range between 20% - 30% of original retail.
  • Items may be reduced due to special promotions or end of season clearance sales.

Sale Time

  • Items will be held for 60 days (starting the day you bring in your pieces).
  • You can pick up anything that doesn't sell before or on the 60-day mark.
  • If you pick up, you will pull the items off the floor yourself. Staff members do not pull items ahead of time.
  • ltems not picked up within 60 days will become property of The Closet Exchange and may be donated. 

Earnings / Payouts

  • 40% to customer / 60% to store
  • Accounts with a balance of $30.00 or more will be mailed a check the 5th of every month. 
  • Accounts with a balance under $30.00 can pick up cash anytime during normal store hours. 
  • Accumulated money can be applied to in store purchases as a store credit. 

 


We require appointments for consignment. Appointments are available Tuesday-Saturday; you may book an appointment through our website by visiting the "Consignment Appointments" tab or giving us a call at (219) 476-1792 during business hours.


We accept gently used women’s clothing, shoes, purses, jewelry, sunglasses and perfume. Items should be stain, tear, smoke and pill free. We ask that your clothes and other merchandise be clean, pressed, and on hangers before you bring them to the store. We will look at all of your belongings while you look around the store. The max amount of items we can accept each appointment is 25 pieces. Once we have made our selections, we will return your hangers to you along with any items we could not accept. 


All items kept will be entered into your account and put on the shop floor for purchase. They will be available to customers for 60 days. You may retrieve your items before or on the date your consignment ends. Staff Members do not pull your items before your arrival. Be prepared to spend up to thirty minutes collecting your remaining merchandise from the floor. If you do not collect your things within this period, the items will become property of The Closet Exchange and may be donated. 


We are currently accepting summer consignment.
